Abstract

Hydrogeochemical assessment of surface water and groundwater was carried out in this study. Twenty water samples were collected from both surface water and groundwater sources and were analyzed for physico – chemical and biological characteristics with the aim of assessing their quality and usability.Results shows that the pH ranged from 6.70 to 7.20 and 6.72 to 7.10, conductivity, 418 to 748 µS/cm and 178 to 1041 µS/cm, turbidity, 0.18 to 7.72 NTU and 0.33 to 2.35 NTU, chloride, 7.0 to 8.40 mg/L and 4.33 to 22.45 mg/L, temperature, 27.9 to 28.7 oC and 27.8 to 29.3 oC , nitrate, 1.00 to 14.20 mg/L and 1.00 to 62.0 mg/L, sulphate, 4.00 to 28.8 mg/L and 4.22 to 60.3 mg/L, bicarbonate, 18.20 to 126.40 mg/L and 3.21 to 154.33 mg/L, calcium, 25.30 to 52.10 mg/L and 1.80 to 38.10 mg/L, magnesium, 21.60 to 52 .30 mg/L and 0.88 to 34.66 mg/L, sodium, 52.40 to 83.20 mg/L and 11.20 to 45.60 mg/L for surface water and groundwater respectively. For heavy metals, chromium ranged from 0 to 0.31 ppm and 0 to 0.002 ppm, aluminium, 0.20 to 5.77 ppm and 1.10 to 1.40 ppm, lead, 0 to 0.001 ppm and 0 to 0.001 ppm for surface water and groundwater respectively. E –coli was absent in groundwater but ranged between 1 and 2 MPN in surface water.Hydrogeochemical and biological parameters in both surface water and groundwater samples agreed with the limits set by the international bodies for drinking and domestic water with few exceptions
